Antibiotics are weapons of mass destruction, often used by people who simply don’t understand
A year or so ago I blogged about my daughter and her new-born son. Adamant that she would have a natural birth, Stephie pushed for about two and a half days!
The baby (Theo, a boy) was born at 9pm. The next morning I arrived to find baby with a drip in its wrist. “What’s that for?’
‘It’s antibiotics. The mother had a slight temperature.’
I think that is only to be expected after pushing for two and a half days, and 0.2 degrees above normal in Mum, hardly warrants antibiotics in a new born baby.
At the time I blogged, I talked of the 7-fold increased risk Theo now had of developing Asthma or some other allergy by the age of 8.
The Truth was that the young woman Doctor at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, just wanted to get baby out of the hospital with no problems on her watch. Did she understand anything about the importance of gut bacteria in baby’s immune development? Not one bit.
This week, I am saddened to report that Theo has been throwing up for 4 days, his blood sugar levels have plummeted, and he is back in hospital on a sugar drip. His condition was life-threatening.
Co-incidentally this week comes a report by Harvard on exactly how dangerous it is to give small children antibiotics. Apparently they wipe out a strain of clostridia. What does this strain do apart from grow baby’s immune system? Blood glucose control.
You can read more on this research HERE.
Then there’s a second research study this week on how Autism has been linked to a lack of a strain of gut bacteria in children See HERE. Of course, the children may have had a stressed mother on drugs at birth, multiple vaccines, or multiple doses of antibiotics; in fact there are many potential reasons why damage to an infant’s gut bacteria can occur.
Fortunately, with a better understanding of the microbiome we may be able to correct these harmful medical interventions in the future.
