Aspartame increases risk of death from cardiovascular disease
In the largest ever study of its kind, the University of Iowa has shown that women who consume aspartame – to the equivalent of two cans of diet soda a day – are 30 per cent more likely to have a cardiovascular event (for example a heart attack) , and are 50 per cent more likely to die froma related disease.
On average, the study found that women who consumed two cans of diet soda a day, were younger, had a higher prevalence of diabetes, high blood pressure and a higher body mass index. They were also more likely to be smokers.
The problem for the mass of the population is that aspartame is everywhere and people not consuming diet soda might still be consuming large volumes.
