Consuming nine tablespoons of olive oil per week can result in a 40 per cent increase in testosterone levels, better circulation, and giving men ‘fewer problems between the sheets’.

According to NHS data, a staggering one in five British men over the age of 40, are affected by erectile problems, largely caused by stress, anxiety, alcohol consumption and poor sleep (2).

In the IKARIA study, scientists from Athens University have shown that just 9 tablespoons of olive oil per week can improve testosterone levels by 40 per cent, reducing levels of erectile dysfunction. Dr Christina Chrysohoou, who led the research, said a Mediterranean Diet and exercise were key to improving the sexual capacity of middle-age and elderly men.

The conclusion of the research was that popping pills like Viagra could only have a short term effect on sexual capacity, but consuming olive oil had long-term benefits as it is known to improve cardiovascular health, blood vessel health and circulation. The researchers claimed it resulted in better erections.

The study had a good sample size – 660 men with an average age of 67. And those that adopted the Rainbow Diet had far fewer problems ‘between the sheets’. And saw a ‘vast improvement in their bedroom prowess’.

According to Web MD, side-effects of Viagra include: dizziness, headache, flushing, stomach upsets, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision. Viagra may also react with other drugs.

Foods to boost Testosterone levels

Other foods suggested by research to increase testosterone levels are oily fish (3), fresh ginger (4), pomegranate juice (5), and oysters for their zinc (6).
