Vitamin D reduces the risk of severe Asthma attacks

Researchers from a number of Universities working as the Cochrane Collaboration have concluded from a number of studies that vitamin D can reduce the risk of severe asthma attacks.

Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin that acts like a hormone, does have anti-inflammatory properties and here it seems to be reducing inflammation in the airways.

Although these findings seem clear, there was only a limited number of studies, no conclusion on the amout of vitamin D was given nor whether this applied to everybody, or just those low in plasma vitamin D.

Vitamin D is made primarily by the action of sunshine on the cholesterol layers under the skin. Recently a Government Health body, Public Health, England, recommended that people should go in the sun, and if they couldn’t, they should supplement as little is found in foods.

Chris Woollams, former Oxford University Biochemist said that “We have long recommended the same – go in the sun – sunshine is sensational, it is burning that’s bad. If you cannot go in the sun, take a daily supplement of at least 2,000 IUs. Sunshine is very important to human health and, frankly, in England, we just don’t get enough!

Vitamin D has also been shown to reduce gut inflammation and gut bacterial composition is known to play a role in asthma too”.
